November has come and gone and we are back with a recap of what AWS announced during that time. This month also included the AWS re:Invent conference so as you would expect there are a lot of additional updates this month. We are going to take a look at the re:Invent effect before we jump into the details of the announcements.
re:Invent Effect:
Somewhat predictably a lot of the content and announcements that were made during re:Invent this year were around Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning services. Also as usual a number of new services were announced and some services were made available in Preview status. Almost half of the announcements for this month came during the week of re:Invent with a total of 195 updates being announced in that one week. The following graph breaks down the distribution of those announcements to highlight the focus on ML related changes.
Note that to allow this to be a complete view we did account for a small number of announcements that happened on December 1 which was the last day of the conference.

This again reinforces the focus around AI and ML with Bedrock and SageMaker both landing in the top 5. There were a number of service level updates that were around adding Foundational Models or Generative AI into the mix for other services as well which is not represented in this data.

Notable Service Updates:
When reviewing the November updates, the following items stood out to us as notable and worth calling out based on their potential to improve how AWS customers utilize these services.
AWS CodeBuild can not use Lambda compute for the build of software projects
AWS Lambda increased the ability to troubleshoot issues in the Init and Restore phase of an invocation through increased logging and observability in CloudWatch
AWS Lambda provides additional controls to allow for easier search, filter, and aggregation of Lambda function logs
AWS Amplify launched the next generation of backend capabilities by allowing developers to define application structure in a code-first manner
AWS Secrets Manager now supports batch retrieval of secrets using a single API call to access groups of secrets
Amazon Managed Services for Prometheus can now provide agentless metric retrieval in EKS clusters
AWS Step Functions now supports HTTPS endpoints in a new TestState API which allows for faster integration of virtually any SaaS solution
AWS announces a preview of new Console-to-Code which allows for creation of IaC in either CDK or CloudFormation based on manual actions performed in the AWS console
AWS S3 now provides an Express One Storage class for applications that need consistent single-digit millisecond request latency when accessing files
Amazon Bedrock now allows for custom training of Titan foundational models using your own unlabeled training data
Amazon CloudWatch can now create recommended metrics and instrumentation for your applications without needing to be manually configured by a developer
Conclusions:
November was a massive month for updates and announcements from AWS. Much of this activity was related to the re:Invent conference, and AWS made significant advancements around their AI/ML products. AWS also announced the launch of a whopping 29 services. Overall, AWS had continued to execute on increasing their AI offerings and integrations into the rest of their services. Check back next month when we will recap announcements from December and take a holistic look at the overall set of changes throughout the course of 2023.
