August and September 2023 Amazon Web Services Announcements

You may have noticed that we missed our monthly update on AWS services in September. We are focused on attending the Groceryshop 2023 trade show so this blog didn’t get quite the attention that we had wanted. However, this means that you're getting a bonus two month update for both August and September this time around.

  • In August some of the notable high level themes were a number of updates to FSx file storage and the Amazon Connect telephony solution

  • Additionally, approximately 30% of the August announcements were regional expansions with a large number of services being added to the new Israel (Tel Aviv) Region

  • In September there was a broad set of increases around data and analytics with updates to RDS, Glue, Sagemaker, and Quicksight all being in the top count of services

  • Expansion of services in to the Israel Region continued in September and Connect also was in the top 5 for the second month in a row

With 354 updates being announced between August and September we have a lot of information to digest. We’ll start by breaking down some of the high level numbers for each of the months below.

August by the Numbers:

Let’s start with some high-level numbers around updates that occurred in August.

  • Total Updates: 222

  • Total Services With Feature Updates: 70

  • Average Daily Updates: 10

  • Average Updates Per Service: 3

  • Regional Service Expansions: 107

September by the Numbers:

Now let's take a look at those same high-level numbers around updates that occurred in September.

  • Total Updates: 132

  • Total Services With Feature Updates: 53

  • Average Daily Updates: 7

  • Average Updates Per Service: 2

  • Regional Service Expansions: 71

The following graph shows a breakdown of how many announcements AWS has made per month this year, and a projection for the balance of the year.

Amazon also released a couple of new services and added compliance to one service during August.

  • AWS Dedicated Local Zones - this service is dedicated infrastructure managed by AWS, but deployed to a local environment or data center

  • Additionally the Claude 2 LLM model from Anthropic is available for use inside of Bedrock preview environments

  • AWS AppFabric has now been certified as being HIPAA eligible for healthcare related workloads

In August the following graph shows the count of updates per service.

Notable Service Updates:

When reviewing the total set of updates for August and September there are a few notable items that may be of interest to customers either currently using some of these services or considering new services to solve a business need.

  • Amazon SQS service has increased throughput for high throughput mode queues. This is increased to 4500 or 9000 transactions per second depending on the region

  • AWS Batch can now use Spot Instances for performing batches under a cost optimization allocation strategy

  • Amazon EventBridge Scheduler can now delete a scheduled even after it’s completion allowing for single instance event triggers

  • AWS Amplify has added support for logging from Swift and Android to send log data to Cloudwatch for centralized aggregation and review of application logs

  • Amazon VPCs now support IPv6 as the primary addressing scheme on elastic network interfaces

  • AWS Global Accelerator has also extended IPv6 support to EC2 endpoints

  • AWS DataSync has expanded its support for copying data to and from other clouds to include additional support for DigitalOcean Spaces, Wasabi Cloud Storage, Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage, Cloudflare R2 Storage, and Oracle Cloud Storage

  • The AWS SAM CLI announced local testing and debugging support on Terraform projects

  • Amazon Kendra has added the ability to access external dynamic content via the user of a web crawler functionality

  • Amazon Quicksight has enhanced the layout and visuals associated with the KPI layout. This now allows for additional visual detail such as templated layouts, conditional formatting and sparklines

  • Amazon Quicksight also has released in preview some new Generative Business Intelligence capabilities which let analysts do things like creating visualizations and complex calculations by expressing the desired output in natural language

  • You can now simulate interruptions with your Spot Fleet allocation directly from the EC2 console which allows for better resilience and recovery testing for workloads that are cost sensitive and are using EC2 Spot Fleet instances

Conclusions:

AWS continues to invest heavily in ML/AI services and ancillary services such as visualization, data storage, and ingestion areas. One of the interesting trends in August and September was focus around Amazon Connect and significant updates to FSx as a storage technology. The addition of a region in Israel also generated a lot of regional expansion for a large number of services. With October being the lead up to Re-Invent it will be interesting to take a look at what updates come out this month and we will be much more timely with our analysis of October. Hopefully, you got caught up on the two months of announcements despite us combining them, and we will be back shortly to recap October. If there is anything we can add to these updates to make them more useful please let us know in Linked In or via our Contact for on this site.
