June 2023 Amazon Web Services Announcements

With half of the year under our belt AWS continues to push a massive number of updates each month. Since January, only April saw a decrease in total updates from the previous month (202 in April vs 207 in May). However when you consider the updates per day that number has increased month over month from 5 updates a day in January to 11 updates per day in June. If you try to keep track of this yourself you need to absorb over 2x the daily announcements that you did at the beginning of the year and there is no indication that this will slow down. At 241 updates June is the largest announcement month so far this year again. As you would expect a lot of the updates are around ML tools such as SageMaker, but there are also a lot of tools adjacent to that space such as allowing Redshift to seamlessly access data in Aurora that can be used for model training. AI and ML continue to make their mark on the focus of technology companies in a number of facets. One other item that was notable is a significant focus on service expanding on the GovCloud regions with 14 of the regional expansion announcements relating to services being added to GovCloud.

June by the Numbers

Let’s start with some high-level numbers around updates that occurred in May.

  • Total Updates: 241

  • Total Services With Feature Updates: 93

  • Average Daily Updates: 11

  • Average Updates Per Service: 3

  • Regional Service Expansions: 148

The following graph shows a breakdown of how many announcements AWS has made per month this year, and a projection for the balance of the year.

Bar graph of monthly update counts and projections for the rest of the year.

Service Specifics

Next let's take a look at the service updates that were released this month. The following are the top 5 services that received updates in June 2023:

  • Amazon SageMaker 12

  • Amazon RDS 10

  • Amazon EC2 8

  • Amazon Connect 8

  • Amazon EMR 5

You can see the continued investment in ML and AI as well as the tooling and data access to support creation, training, and management of those kinds of systems.

Additionally, Amazon released a number of new services or moved services into GA in June which are discuss below. For Regional connectivity AWS added an Osaka Japan location in the Jakarta region to their Global Accelerator bringing the total number of supported regions to 24. An edge location was added in Nigeria specifically with a location in Lagos which should improve latency for customers in Nigeria by up to 20%.

Some services get more attention each month than others. The following graph shows a count of updates per service during June.

Bar graph of the count of updates in June for each service.

For new services AWS has added the following services or moved preview services to GA.

  • Amazon Kinesis Video Streams Edge Agent - this is intended to support video recording and storage on an IP camera or edge device and then streaming of that video to the cloud through use of AWS IoT core.

  • AWS AppFabric - the no code solution is intended to allow connection of SaaS applications such as Asana, Atlassian, Dropbox and others to security tools including Logz.io, NetWitness, Rapid7, and Splunk. This integration is intended to allow for IT and security teams to have access to a centralized repository of data around these tools and allows for some generative AI insights on the data

  • Amazon CodeGuru Security available in Preview - This static application security testing allows for identifying and in some cases remediating the code vulnerabilities. For some classes of problem the service can even provide proposed patches to the code to remediate issues.

  • Amazon Verified Permissions is GA - This service allows for validation of fine grained user level permissions based around the open source Cedar access control language. This high availability service gives a model for authentication and authorization for applications that leverage AWS Cognito through validation of attributes attached to Cognito tokens.

  • Amazon FinSpace is GA - This managed solution for migrating the common KX Systems kdb insights platform to a managed environment is intended to allow customers to have a highly available, scalable, and responsive approach to leveraging the cloud for analyzing capital markets data.

  • General availability for AWS Database Migration Service Serverless - this new flavor of AWS DMS allows for migrations to scale to zero when not in use, and aims to improve the speed with which a database migration can be created. This approach also allows you to only use the resources that you actually use when executing your migrations.

A few services also received updates that made them compatible with customers who have various compliance needs.

  • Amazon Managed Grafana is now SOC compliant allowing customers to visualize and work with SOC scoped data in the tool

  • AWS Mainframe Modernization is now HIPAA eligible allowing customers to migrate their mainframe workloads that cover HIPAA data to this service.

  • Amazon MemoryDB for Redis is now available for use in situations that are in scope for FedRAMP Moderate compliance requirements

  • AWS Control Tower can now be used with workloads that require FedRAMP high categorization in AWS GovCloud regions

Notable Service Updates

When reviewing the June updates a few items jumped out as potentially interesting to customers across a handful of various services.

  • Amazon CloudWatch adds dashboard variable support. This allows you to create dashboards that allow for easily switching between views in widgets such as log associated with a set of Lambdas or EC2 instances

  • Amazon CloudWatch now supports tailing logs from CloudWatch in real time using a feature called Live Tail. This also allows for filtering and highlighting of key information which provides an excellent new tool for troubleshooting, but also for production validation of a new release for example.

  • AWS Lambda now provides a read only file that includes all of the environment variable keys and values for the Lambdas execution environment. This simplifies allowing developers to incorporate those environment variables with less guesswork about accessing them and their values.

  • AWS Resilience Hub adds resilience support for EC2 instances. This allows for defining, validating, and tracking the uptime associated with applications that are deployed on EC2 instances in addition to other delivery models. This allows customers with more types of applications to take advantage of Resilience Hub.

  • AWS Step Functions has added the ability to deploy in an immutable manner via Versions and Aliases. This allows for new iterations of a Step Function to be deployed without impacting the existing version which provides new options for rolling out and rolling back changes to Step Functions.

  • Amazon ECR has added the k8s.io registry as an available upstream image source for container images. Customers can now configure ECR to automatically sync images from the Kubernetes registry in their private ECR repositories.

  • AWS CloudFormation Stack Sets now allows for programmatically enabling Organization Trust Access which allows Stack Sets to be deployed across accounts in an AWS Organization. Additionally, stack sets will now skip suspended accounts in an organization which speeds up deployments.

  • Amazon EC2 Instance Connect has been upgraded to allow for accessing EC2 instances in private subnets over either SSH or RDP without needing a public internet access. This removes the need to have a Bastion host or add routing and a public IP address to access an EC2 instance. This creates much better options for testing and working with applications in private network segments

  • Amazon Quicksight has added a new visualization element to maps in the form of a geospatial heatmap. This allows for clearer presentation of highly dense data through color changes that indicate the density of the values at a given location.

Conclusion

June again broke a record for number of updates in a single month. Since we have wrapped up the first 6 months of the year it’s worth noting that AWS has made 1100 announcements in the first half of 2023. We continue to see focus and enhancements in AI and ML tools as well as supporting infrastructure. Some improvements in access and ability to manage infrastructure also should make DevOps teams lives a little bit easier with the updates made in June. Hopefully, this has helped you digest the large number of AWS updates in June and we’ll see you again next month for a run down of what happened in July.
